Bail Decision Looms for Ex-Attorney General Amidst Health Crisis

The Suva Magistrates Court is set to make a decision today regarding former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum’s bail variation application submitted last week.

Last Friday, Resident Magistrate Sufia Hamza opted not to get involved in the ongoing case against Sayed-Khaiyum that is being overseen by her brother, Magistrate Yogesh Prasad.

On Thursday, Sayed-Khaiyum was taken to the hospital due to severe pain, with assistance from his aide and brother, Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Sayed-Khaiyum, alongside former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and former Health Minister Dr. Neil Sharma, faces charges for allegedly not adhering to the statutory requirements for tenders as outlined in the 2010 Procurement Regulation. Bainimarama has been charged with one count of abuse of office, while Sayed-Khaiyum faces one count of abuse of office and one count of obstructing justice. Sharma is charged with two counts of abuse of office and two counts of breach of trust as a public service employee.

The proceedings have been adjourned until 12:30 pm today, and Sayed-Khaiyum has been instructed to appear in court.
