Bail Battle: Will Fiji’s Former Police Chief Walk Free?

The Fiji Court of Appeal has announced that it will hear the appeal for bail concerning former Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho, who is currently serving a one-year sentence. During a recent court appearance at the Veiuto Court Complex, Qiliho was present alongside former Prime Minister Bainimarama, who was granted early release last month.

Both individuals were convicted by the High Court in Suva on March 14 of this year. In court, their legal representative, Devanesh Sharma, indicated that they were withdrawing a previous motion concerning their conviction and sentencing, which had been submitted on April 23, 2022. Despite this withdrawal, the case proceeded. Sharma expressed optimism, stating that since Bainimarama has already received an early release, he is hopeful that Qiliho will achieve a similar outcome.

Justice Chandana Prematilaka granted the applicants 21 days to submit their arguments for bail pending appeal. The State is required to respond to these submissions by January 21. Afterward, Sharma has until January 28 to address the State’s response. The next court mention is scheduled for January 30.

This situation reflects the complexities of legal proceedings and the ongoing efforts of the former officials to navigate their appeals. The timeline set by the court suggests a structured approach towards reaching a resolution, offering a glimpse of potential outcomes in the near future. There remains a possibility for positive developments, particularly for Qiliho as he seeks an early release similar to that granted to Bainimarama.

This case embodies the ongoing legal battles that impact key figures in Fijian governance, which could lead to further discussions on justice and accountability in the region.
