Bail Application for Former Minister Postponed Amid Controversy

The application for bail variation submitted by former Minister for Fisheries and Forests Kalaveti Ravu, seeking permission to travel to China, has been postponed until next Monday. Today’s court session was canceled due to the Magistrate’s illness. Ravu faces a charge of abuse of office, while Regional Manager North Tekata Toaisi is charged with aiding and abetting this offense. The allegations claim that from July 25, 2023, to August 31, 2023, Ravu interfered with a lawful Ministry of Forestry investigation into the illegal trade of prohibited beche-de-mer species. Toaisi is accused of assisting Ravu in this abuse of office while employed at the Ministry. Ravu has previously pleaded not guilty, and the case is set to resume on October 7 for a bail variation hearing.
