A former Cabinet minister and current MP from the People’s Alliance is facing backlash after making derogatory comments on social media about individuals supporting the ongoing court case involving Charlie Charters. The remarks, posted in the iTaukei language on Facebook, have been criticized for their offensive nature and for targeting ordinary citizens participating in the legal proceedings.

Since the comment’s publication, strong reactions have emerged online, prompting questions about the appropriateness of language used by an elected representative. Naulu Mataitini, a member of the Great Council of Chiefs, responded to the situation by expressing concern over the diminishing standards of public discourse. He emphasized that the insult aimed at supporters of the court process undermines the values of respect and leadership expected from political figures.

Mataitini stated, “The insult was directed at ordinary citizens exercising their right to express support for a court process,” adding that such conduct from a Member of Parliament is detrimental to democratic principles. Social media reactions have included condemnation from individuals like Tanya Waqanika, who described the remarks as “sad and shameful” coming from someone in a position of authority.

This incident serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with holding public office and the need for leaders to engage respectfully with constituents. While this episode raises concerns about public discourse, it also presents an opportunity for dialogue on how elected officials communicate with the public, highlighting the importance of respectful engagement in a democratic society.
