Back-to-School Shopping: Tips to Avoid Scams and Save Money!

As families in Fiji prepare for the upcoming academic year, the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is urging consumers to stay vigilant while shopping for back-to-school supplies. Joel Abraham, the FCCC’s Chief Executive, emphasizes the significance of careful budgeting and planning, as many parents face financial pressures during this period.

Abraham advises parents to compare prices and select reputable retailers to make the most of their shopping experience. “This can help ensure that children acquire all the essential supplies for the academic year while avoiding misleading sales tactics,” he stated.

In line with this effort, the FCCC regulates prices for stationery and textbooks under the Counter Inflation (Price Control) (Stationery and Textbooks) (No.24) Order 1993. This regulation specifies allowable profit margins for wholesalers and retailers, designed to promote fair pricing. To ensure compliance, the FCCC has conducted over 140 inspections and surveillances focused on back-to-school items, assessing whether price markups align with established regulations.

A notable concern this year involves scams related to school vouchers that promise significant discounts or “free” supplies. Abraham cautions consumers to carefully verify such offers to protect themselves from financial loss. “It’s essential to be aware of fraudulent schemes that take advantage of the urgency of back-to-school shopping,” he warned.

Consumers are encouraged to compare prices across multiple outlets, examine product labels for quality assurance, and familiarize themselves with return policies, especially for electronics. Furthermore, if instances of price gouging or unfair trading practices are discovered, the FCCC urges individuals to report these issues promptly.

The FCCC is committed to closely monitoring market practices throughout this back-to-school season to protect consumers and uphold a fair shopping environment. By remaining informed and cautious, families can navigate their back-to-school shopping confidently, making the start of the academic year a positive experience for everyone.

In summary, the proactive measures taken by the FCCC not only help safeguard consumers but also emphasize the importance of community vigilance and engagement during this crucial shopping season. This collective awareness fosters a supportive environment where families can thrive without the fear of exploitation while preparing for the school year ahead.
