Parents and guardians in Fiji are set to receive $200 Back-to-School Support payments starting tonight, as announced by Finance Minister Prof. Biman Prasad. Originally scheduled for disbursement on January 15, the decision to expedite payments aims to assist families gearing up for the new school year beginning January 27, 2025.
Minister Prasad shared that a total of 208,673 applications were submitted for this financial support, with 200,176 of them successfully processed, resulting in a total payout amounting to $40.4 million. Meanwhile, 8,313 applications remain on hold, pending Year-12 exam results.
The program is designed to alleviate the financial pressures associated with essential school-related expenses such as uniforms, shoes, school bags, and stationery. Payments will be made conveniently via mobile platforms MPAiSA or MyCASH.
This assistance comes as part of the Coalition Government’s commitment to supporting families, particularly those with household incomes below $50,000. Historically, this initiative has assisted around 200,000 students annually, with the government investing approximately $130 million in educational support each year. The timely rollout of these funds is particularly significant as families prepare for the expenses of the back-to-school season.
The $200 support not only lightens the immediate financial burden on families but also highlights the government’s dedication to fostering educational readiness. This initiative provides hope and relief for many families, helping to ensure that students are well-equipped as they embark on a new academic year filled with promise and opportunities.
