The Ministry of Finance has officially commenced the distribution of the $200 Back-to-School Assistance today, with payments expected to continue throughout the weekend. This initiative, aimed at easing the financial burden on families, has attracted a total of 204,872 applications for the upcoming 2026 school year.
After a thorough vetting and verification process, eligible parents and guardians will start receiving payments. In the first wave of distribution, approximately 185,000 students are set to benefit, with the total payout anticipated to reach around $37 million. For students moving from Year 12 to Year 13, payments will be issued once their enrolment for the 2026 academic year is confirmed.
However, around 10,000 applications remain pending verification, largely due to incomplete or incorrect information. The Ministry of Education is collaborating with schools to assist affected families in resolving these issues, ensuring that all eligible students receive the financial support they need.
Parents and guardians who do not receive their assistance by Monday of next week are advised to reach out for help at their nearest Ministry of Education District Office or through the Help Desk at Waisomo House. They can also obtain assistance by calling the Ministry’s Help Desk numbers: 3220551, 3314477, 9980079, and 9986069.
The Ministry of Finance has encouraged responsible use of this assistance to address educational needs. Furthermore, it has warned that it will take action with relevant agencies to combat price gouging or any unfair practices related to the assistance program.
The Government remains dedicated to supporting families and ensuring that eligible students are well-prepared for the upcoming academic year, sending best wishes to all students and parents as the school year approaches. This proactive financial support is a timely initiative that aims to create a more equitable educational environment.
