The Fiji Baby Pearls under-21 netball team has embarked on their training journey in preparation for the upcoming Netball World Youth Cup, set to take place in Gibraltar from September 19 to 28, 2025. As they regrouped this week, head coach Simone Nalatu emphasized the significance of fitness and skill execution for the team’s success.
Nalatu stressed the need for the players to enhance their physical fitness and strength, while also maintaining their unique Fijian playing style under pressure. “We need to become fitter and stronger than we’ve been before. We are also keen to ensure we can execute basic skills well under pressure without losing our Fijian flair,” she stated.
The Baby Pearls will face a challenging lineup in Pool D, encountering tough competitors such as South Africa, Malawi, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago. Recognizing the diverse playing styles of these teams, Nalatu noted the importance of adaptability throughout the tournament. “They all have their own style of play, and we will need to cope with that constantly to ensure we are capable of the challenge,” she said.
Their preparation is not just about improving physical techniques but also fostering team unity, allowing the players to develop a cohesive approach as they tackle some of the world’s best youth netball teams.
Historically, Fiji’s participation at the youth level has highlighted their emerging talent and commitment to the sport. As they hone their skills in training, this dedication might not only prepare them for the World Youth Cup but also inspire a new generation of netball players in Fiji.
In summary, the Fiji Baby Pearls are poised for a significant opportunity to showcase their talent on a global platform. With focused training and strong determination, they aim to make their mark at the Netball World Youth Cup, reflecting the passion and potential of Fiji’s netball community on the world stage. There’s a hopeful outlook for their future performances as they prepare to elevate their nation’s presence in international netball.
