Ba Town is on the brink of overcoming its longstanding flooding challenges, thanks to the successful completion of essential dredging operations along the Ba River. Undertaken by the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, this project marks a significant achievement in addressing the town’s flooding issues that have affected it for many years.

Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Vatimi Rayalu, articulated the importance of this initiative, illustrating the government’s evidence-based approach to disaster risk reduction. This project plays a crucial role in the National Flood Management Strategy and aligns with international commitments under the Sendai Framework and the Sustainable Development Goals. Rayalu highlighted how progressive sediment buildup at the river mouth had previously diminished the river’s discharge capacity, transforming normal rainfall into catastrophic flooding events.

The dredging project was carried out by Hall Contracting, which successfully removed over 300,000 cubic meters of silt, sand, and gravel from a 3.6-kilometer stretch of the river, significantly enhancing its ability to manage rainwater and mitigate the risks of flooding. CEO Cameron Hall noted that the dredging was completed to a depth of around three meters below mean sea level throughout the nine-month project, which commenced in August 2024 and concluded in May 2025.

This initiative not only reduces the frequency and severity of floods in Ba Town but also provides multi-dimensional benefits, including improved agricultural land protection, better water quality, and increased navigational safety for local fishing communities. Furthermore, it contributes to local economic stability, fostering confidence for future development and settlement in the region.

While future maintenance will be needed to contend with natural sedimentation, the project represents a hopeful step toward sustainable development and resilience against flooding for the communities in and around Ba. It reflects a proactive commitment to tackling past disasters and building a safer future for residents.
