An important agreement has been finalized to provide cost of living adjustment (COLA) payments to workers of the Ba Town Council for the next three years, thanks to successful negotiations facilitated by the National Union of Workers (NUW). The NUW, which is affiliated with the Fiji Trades Union Congress, stepped in after discussions between the council and its employees reached a standstill.

The breakthrough was made possible through the intervention of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations Minister Agni Deo Singh, who encouraged both sides to engage in constructive dialogue to prevent further tensions and promote industrial harmony. Singh characterized the outcome as a positive result of collaborative efforts, balancing the welfare of workers with the operational requirements of the Council.

According to the agreement, the COLA payments for 2024 will be structured in three installments, with the first payment scheduled on or before Easter, the second by July 31, and the last by October 10. For 2025, payments will occur in two installments—one to be paid before Christmas and the other by mid-March. The COLA adjustment for 2026 will take effect on January 1.

Minister Singh commended both the council management and the union for their commitment to reaching a mutually beneficial settlement, underscoring the significance of ongoing cooperation in maintaining stable industrial relations. He emphasized that this agreement reflects the positive impact of social dialogue in addressing workplace challenges effectively and equitably. This collaborative approach not only enhances the well-being of the workers but also contributes to a more harmonious working environment.
