Ba Town Council Faces Leadership Shakeup Amid Worker Protests

Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalusima has appointed a new acting CEO for the Ba Town Council in response to a strike by 34 general workers earlier today. The employees were protesting grievances against the previous acting CEO.

“I went down to Ba Town to resolve concerns raised by council workers,” Mr. Nalusima stated. He expressed commitment to addressing key issues highlighted by the workers, with the expectation that these matters will be managed by the newly appointed acting CEO, effective February 27, 2025.

Following the appointment, Mr. Nalusima announced that the protesting workers would resume their duties on Thursday, February 27, 2024. He emphasized the need for collaboration and consultation among municipal council leaders and workers to ensure quality service delivery to the communities across Fiji.

This incident reflects ongoing changes in local governance and follows previous patterns of leadership transitions within municipal councils. Recently, salaries and roles of acting CEOs across various councils, including Nasinu and Suva, have been scrutinized, with discussions surrounding their compensation and effectiveness. The government’s focus on these leadership appointments suggests a drive toward improved governance and service delivery, which could positively impact local communities.

As the recruitment process for permanent CEOs continues, this may open opportunities for enhanced accountability and better management in councils, fostering a more responsive and effective local governance system. The recent developments in Ba Town Council demonstrate proactive measures being taken to ensure that local government functions efficiently, ultimately benefiting the community.
