Two out of three supermarkets in Ba were found in violation of food safety and hygiene standards during inspections conducted yesterday, resulting in non-compliance notices being issued. The inspections, carried out by health inspectors in collaboration with Ba Town Council officials, uncovered concerning conditions within the establishments.
Among the violations noted were broken floor tiles in the butcher areas, unsanitary workspaces beneath sinks, and staff members failing to adhere to the requirement of wearing closed shoes. Additionally, inspectors found damaged food packaging, rotten vegetables, and dented cans displayed for sale. Alarmingly, one supermarket was discovered storing kerosene dangerously close to food items, while a display freezer was noted to have an exposed light bulb, raising concerns over potential glass contamination.
Both supermarkets also failed to maintain essential records related to cleaning, pest control, and proper stock rotation, indicating a significant lapse in fundamental food safety management practices. Authorities have given the businesses a period of seven days to address these critical issues, which includes deep cleaning, making necessary structural repairs, providing staff training, and ensuring proper documentation is kept.
Re-inspections will be conducted to verify that the supermarkets have achieved full compliance with health regulations. Officials emphasized that this decisive action exemplifies a zero-tolerance policy towards any practices that could jeopardize public health, reinforcing the importance of maintaining high standards in food safety and hygiene. Through these measures, the authorities aim to ensure that consumers can shop with confidence knowing their health is prioritized.
