The Ba Rugby Union has announced the appointment of Ben Tora as the new head coach for the forthcoming domestic competition. This decision was confirmed by Ba Rugby Union secretary Gabby Kautoga, who noted that Tora is taking over from former Flying Fijians star winger Vilimoni Delasau. Delasau has transitioned into the role of Ba Rugby ambassador, though he will continue to support the team despite facing challenges related to old injuries that limit his ability to participate fully.
Kautoga highlighted that Tora’s selection came after a thorough interview process, ensuring he is well-prepared for his new role. Additionally, there is a new head coach for the Ba women’s rugby team, Waisale Tikomailepanoni, while Josaia Tuwai will remain in charge of the Ba Under-20 team.
In a positive development for the club, Kautoga shared insights from a recent Special General Meeting, outlining a contingency plan for club games if the Fiji Rugby Union shifts the Skipper Cup competition schedule to August next year. He expressed optimism about improvements within the club, indicating plans to increase the number of participating clubs from 32 to 40 next year. He emphasized the need for clubs to enhance their administrative work regarding team lists, registrations, and to streamline game-day operations.
Kautoga acknowledged the progress made so far, but stressed the importance of continuous improvement to elevate the standard of play and administration, with a focus on being competitive in the Skipper Cup competition. The union aims to maintain a spot in the top five, aiming to compete for the prestigious Farebrother Trophy, building on this year’s achievement of securing a place in the top eight and avoiding relegation.
This new leadership brings renewed hope for the Ba Rugby Union, allowing them to build a stronger foundation for success in both men’s and women’s rugby. With ambitious goals set for the upcoming seasons, the Ba Rugby Union is poised for growth and development on and off the field.
