The Ba Rugby Union has appointed Ben Tora as the new head coach ahead of the upcoming domestic competition. This announcement was made by Ba Rugby Union secretary Gabby Kautoga, who also indicated that Tora will be taking over from former Flying Fijian star winger Vilimoni Delasau. While Delasau transitions to the role of Ba Rugby ambassador, he will remain involved with the team, although ongoing injuries have limited his ability to actively participate.
Kautoga confirmed that Tora’s selection followed a thorough interview and assessment process. Additionally, Waisale Tikomailepanoni has been appointed as the head coach for the Ba women’s rugby team, and Josaia Tuwai continues as the head coach for the Ba Under-20 team.
At a recent Special General Meeting, Kautoga mentioned that the Ba Rugby Union is preparing for potential changes to the Fiji Rugby Union’s scheduling, particularly if the Skipper Cup competition is moved to August next year. He expressed hopes for improvements in game organization and administration, aiming to raise the overall level of play and club management.
The union plans to expand from 32 to 40 clubs for the next season, encouraging existing clubs to enhance their administrative practices, such as managing team lists and registration processes. Kautoga highlighted the progress made so far, stating that while significant achievements have been accomplished, more work is necessary to ensure continued growth over the next three years.
Looking ahead, Ba Rugby aims to secure a spot in the top five of the Skipper Cup competition, building on their past goal of finishing in the top eight. Kautoga expressed optimism about competing for the Farebrother Trophy in the coming season.
This move from the Ba Rugby Union signals a commitment to development and improvement within local rugby, providing a hopeful outlook for the future of the sport in the region. The emphasis on enhancing administration and increasing club participation reflects a proactive approach to building a stronger rugby community.
