Vinod Patel Ba will face the Drua Development XV in a highly anticipated match that serves as the opener for the Super Rugby fixture on March 14, where the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua will take on the Brumbies at the historic 4R Govind Park. This event marks a significant moment for Ba Rugby Union, as President Daksesh Patel expressed that playing against the Drua Development team is a tremendous honor, particularly at a venue with deep local significance.
Govind Park, established 50 years ago in 1976 and named after former mayor Kishore Govind, has been central to the community’s sporting culture. Patel highlighted that this initiative provides a substantial boost to the senior Ba players as they prepare for the 2026 Skipper Cup.
The Ba Rugby Union aims not only to strengthen its rugby team but also to contribute positively to the local community by supporting young athletes in continuing their education. Patel noted the organization’s commitment to social integration and creating pathways for both players and officials. Historically, Ba has lagged in rugby development compared to other major unions, but the current executives are dedicated to improving resources, experience, and facilities.
Patel emphasized the importance of the Fijian Drua in the local rugby scene, stating that they are revered by aspiring players. He believes this game will enhance the relationship between provincial rugby and the Drua, as well as showcase the potential for growth within the sport.
Nemani Nadolo-Kuridrani, the development coach for the Fijian Drua, expressed his approval of the scheduled curtain-raisers, which will also include matches featuring Malolo and the Aussie Fijians U20s. The addition of these games is expected to provide fans with double the excitement on match day.
Patel expressed gratitude to the Drua management for their partnership and extended a warm welcome to the Drua Development team as they prepare to take on Vinod Patel Ba on March 14. This event signifies a burgeoning partnership in Fijian rugby, reflecting a hope for a brighter future for provincial teams.
