The Ba Provincial Council has committed to investing in the development of iTaukei communities by contributing 10 percent of its total land lease earnings to the Government. This initiative was highlighted during a recent talanoa session with Vuda landowners at Viseisei, near Lautoka, where iTaukei Affairs Minister Ifereimi Vasu expressed gratitude for this collaboration.
Minister Vasu stated, “The ministry had requested the Bose Levu Vakaturaga for a portion of their lease money to be kept for the development of our iTaukei community.” He acknowledged the support from the Ba Provincial Council and the Vanua o Vuda, recognizing their generosity in fulfilling this request for community development.
Chairman of the Ba Provincial Council, Ratu Meli Tora Tavaiqia, confirmed that the initiative received unanimous support from the chiefs at the first meeting of the Great Council of Chiefs on Bau in 2023. He emphasized, “It came down to us looking out for our people and strengthening our relationships.” Ratu Meli noted that Ba’s contribution is substantial, projecting that 10 percent of their lease earnings would reach into the millions, signifying a significant financial boost for local community initiatives.
This recent move aligns with ongoing efforts to empower iTaukei communities. Earlier initiatives, such as the distribution of machinery and financial assistance through the iTaukei Development Fund, are also steps towards supporting landowners in improving economic self-sufficiency. Such collaborative efforts promise a hopeful future, as they not only enhance local infrastructure but also empower individuals to be active participants in their economic development.
As these proactive measures unfold, there is an optimistic outlook for the iTaukei community, indicating potential advancements in infrastructure, entrepreneurship, and overall quality of life. These initiatives demonstrate a commitment to fostering meaningful growth and equitable resource distribution among the iTaukei people, paving the way for a brighter future.
