Ba Primary Schools Athletics Meet: Fiji’s Rising Young Track Stars Shine

The Ba Primary Schools Athletics meet at Churchill Park was a memorable event for young athletes, showcasing remarkable talents like Samuela Vurabere and Salote Mahu, who left their mark on the competition. Ten-year-old Samuela Vurabere celebrated a significant victory in the Under-11 boys’ 100 meters final, attributing his success to his rigorous training and the unwavering support of his parents.

Vurabere, a Year Five student at FSC Primary School from Naroro, Nadroga, expressed his excitement, saying, “I always train every day and I’m excited with my win today.” He thanked his parents for their encouragement, demonstrating the importance of family support in nurturing young athletes. Samuela also shared his aspirations of becoming a carpenter while aiming to continually improve his athletic performance as he prepares for the upcoming Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Championships.

Similarly, Salote Mahu, a Year Eight student also from Nadroga, achieved success with a win in the Under-14 girls’ long jump, where she recorded an impressive best effort of 4.27 meters. “I was a bit nervous and excited that I won gold,” Mahu commented. As she prepares to join AD Patel College next year, the victory has bolstered her confidence in pursuing athletics at the secondary school level.

The event not only showcased individual accomplishments but also served as a precursor to future competitions, with both Nadroga athletes now looking forward to representing Ba at the national primary schools athletics meet later this year. Their achievements highlight the dedication and promise of young athletes in Fiji, a sentiment resonating with recent events where schools across the country have rallied to encourage youth participation in sports.

Similar events, such as the recent athletics competition that featured schools like Votua Catholic and Ba Muslim, emphasize the collective talent and competitive spirit among Fijian youth. The enthusiasm and support from families and communities foster an environment where young athletes can thrive, inspiring the next generation to excel in sports. The future of athletics in Fiji looks promising, with these young stars paving the way for continued excellence and community pride in sports.
