The inauguration of the new $29 million Ba Court complex took place yesterday, signifying a significant advancement for the judiciary in bringing its services closer to the community. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka officiated the opening, underscoring the Government’s dedication to fostering respect for the rule of law and ensuring that justice is accessible to everyone.
Mr. Rabuka emphasized that every citizen has the right to pursue justice under the law, declaring the new Ba facility a remarkable achievement equipped with modern amenities that will ease the judicial workload in the area. He further acknowledged the leadership of Acting Chief Justice Salesi Temo, highlighting the establishment of a High Court within the new complex, which will allow litigants to address High Court matters locally without the need to travel to Lautoka.
The jurisdiction of the newly opened complex extends to the towns of Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki, as well as the surrounding regions, including parts of Ra Province. The Prime Minister reiterated the Coalition Government’s commitment to enhancing the rule of law and improving access to justice for all citizens.
He noted that the right to seek justice holds little value if not acted upon and praised the judiciary for its progressive strides in fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities and serving the community’s justice needs.
The new Ba High Court will handle appeals from the Central Agricultural Tribunal, alongside civil, criminal, and family court appeals. Mr. Rabuka concluded by highlighting the importance of collective efforts in ensuring sustainable development, expressing hope for a prosperous future for Fiji.
This opening signifies a hopeful step towards a more equitable legal system, reflecting the Government’s vision of a justice system that is accessible and efficient for all citizens. The expansion of judicial facilities is expected to foster community support and involvement, thereby contributing to the overall development and resilience of the nation.
