Adi Veniana Nasova is grappling with overwhelming grief following the tragic loss of her only son, Mikaele Tora, who died in a truck accident early Wednesday morning. The incident occurred when the vehicle he was driving plunged into the Nacaci River near Toge in Ba.
In a heartfelt interview at her home in Toge Village, the 61-year-old mother shared the painful details of that fateful night. Mikaele, 38, had reassured his young daughters that he would return home by 9 PM. However, the family’s world turned upside down when her husband received a phone call around midnight, informing them of the accident. “We did not know whether he was dead or alive until a police officer from Nanukuloa, Ba called to tell us he had died,” she recounted, still in disbelief.
Throughout the day on Tuesday, Mikaele had been in contact with family. He had informed his mother around 4 PM that he would be going to town to collect goats and later confided to his wife that he was transporting passengers to Saunokonoko.
Adi Veniana spoke fondly of her son, describing him as a diligent and respectful individual who was deeply admired in their community. “Those who knew him would never see him with a frown on his face; he would always be smiling while greeting them,” she reflected.
A group of fishermen who were nearby at the time of the accident played a crucial role in the retrieval of Mikaele’s body, which was subsequently taken to the Aspen Medical Ba Hospital. His family has announced that he will be laid to rest next Wednesday. Mikaele leaves behind his wife and two daughters, who will undoubtedly feel the profound impact of his loss.
As police continue their investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident, the community mourns the loss of a beloved figure, whose kindness and laughter will be greatly missed.
