In Nausori’s Dilkusha area, 12-year-old Ayaan Ravitesh Chand stands out as a symbol of strength and resilience. He is the eldest of four siblings, living with his grandmother, Sunita Wati, and two younger brothers. Ayaan has become a pillar of support and love for his family, especially since his challenging journey began at the age of three, during a memorable visit with his grandmother.
Recalling those early days, his mother, Preetika Priya Kumar, described him as a lively and playful child until a visit to the health center revealed a concerning issue. Initial assessments overlooked his condition, but a subsequent X-ray at Nakasi Health Centre led to the diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
“When we arrived at CWM Hospital, doctors informed us he had only 24 percent oxygen in his body,” Preetika recalled, expressing the fear they felt at that moment. “We were terrified, but we had to fight for him.”
Thanks to the assistance of WOWS Kids Fiji, Ayaan received critical support including grocery vouchers and financial help, which was instrumental in his treatment.
“The chemotherapy was tough, but Ayaan showed remarkable courage. By the end of 2016, he was leukemia-free, which felt like a miracle,” his mother added. She noted that at such a young age, Ayaan did not fully grasp the gravity of his experience but exemplified a warrior spirit that motivated everyone around him.
While his father was not present during his treatment, Ayaan received steadfast support from his maternal family, particularly from his grandmother, Sunita, and other relatives. Sunita shared her profound loss of her husband and daughter within six months last year, noting that Ayaan’s strength provided her comfort during her grief.
“He has been my rock since my husband passed away,” she said, highlighting Ayaan’s caring nature. He often helps with household chores and shows deep concern for his grandmother’s well-being. “He always thinks of others. He truly is a special boy,” Sunita added.
Today, Ayaan is flourishing—taller than his grandmother and full of life. He enjoys cooking, drawing, and singing, often testing new recipes inspired by his late aunt, much to Sunita’s delight as she encourages him to experiment.
At Saraswati Primary School, Ayaan is cherished by his teachers and peers alike. Despite his challenges, he maintains a demeanor filled with grace and empathy. Preetika stresses the significance of parental vigilance regarding children’s health, advising all parents to take responsibility for their children’s wellbeing when they are ill.
Ayaan’s inspiring transition from a sickly young boy to a vibrant, energetic child showcases the profound impact of love, support, and determination. His journey serves as a beacon of hope, reminding everyone that strength and resilience can triumph over adversity.
