As Fiji prepares for the new academic year, the Fijian Competition & Consumer Commission (FCCC) has called on consumers to stay alert and well-informed while shopping for back-to-school supplies. FCCC Chief Executive Joel Abraham stressed the importance of budgeting and planning, as many families face financial strains during this time.
He advised parents and guardians to maximize their purchasing power by comparing prices, selecting trustworthy retailers, and being cautious of sales tactics that may be misleading. “By doing so, they can ensure their children have all the necessary supplies for the year ahead,” Abraham noted.
The FCCC regulates prices for stationery and textbooks through the Counter Inflation (Price Control) (Stationery and Textbooks) (No.24) Order of 1993, which outlines allowable profit margins for wholesalers and retailers. The commission monitors compliance through a rigorous system of inspections and surveillance, which has so far included over 140 targeted surveys specifically focused on back-to-school items.
“During our inspections, we assess the pricing practices to confirm that they align with the regulations,” Abraham explained. A significant concern this year is the rise of scams related to school vouchers, wherein fraudulent offers promise substantial discounts or free supplies. He cautioned consumers to be vigilant and verify these offers before disclosing any personal or financial details.
Parents are encouraged to compare prices across various stores, check product labels to avoid low-quality items, and review return policies, especially for electronics. Additionally, the FCCC encourages individuals to report any instances of price gouging or unfair trading practices.
“Amid the back-to-school rush, some traders may try to exploit consumers,” said Abraham. He urged everyone to remain observant and report dubious activities to the FCCC, emphasizing that community vigilance helps protect everyone’s interests.
Looking ahead, the FCCC remains committed to protecting consumers by closely monitoring market practices throughout the back-to-school season and promptly addressing any identified violations.
This proactive approach ensures that families can confidently navigate their back-to-school shopping while promoting a spirit of fairness and community support. By remaining informed and cautious, consumers can help foster an environment where ethical trading is prioritized, making the start of the academic year a positive experience for all.
