Aviation Insights: Marianas Eye New Routes at Routes Asia 2025

Representatives from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), including the Office of the Governor, Commonwealth Ports Authority, and the Marianas Visitors Authority, recently attended Routes Asia 2025 in Perth, Australia. There, they engaged with 17 airlines to explore potential new air services to the Marianas, a key region for air travel in the Asia-Pacific.

Routes Asia provides a significant platform for airport and airline executives to discuss and establish new routes, and this year’s conference was attended by numerous stakeholders in the aviation and tourism sectors. MVA Managing Director Jamika T. Taijeron emphasized the importance of these face-to-face meetings with airline decision-makers, as they’ve been linked to over half of the world’s new air services being developed through Routes events.

The Marianas delegation had the opportunity to engage in detailed business-to-business sessions with airlines, including major carriers such as Japan Airlines, AirAsia, and Philippine Airlines, among others. Notably, many airlines expressed that they are currently facing delays in receiving new aircraft, pushing back their expansion plans until 2026 and 2027. Taijeron indicated that this situation offers the delegation time to develop strategic plans for new routes, with an eye on increasing demand in source markets ahead of the new aircraft delivery dates.

The airlines also highlighted considerations that impact their decisions to initiate services to The Marianas, including consumer demand, geographic suitability, licensing, crew availability, and airport capabilities and costs. To enhance awareness and showcase The Marianas as a travel destination, the delegation set up an information booth at the conference, interacting with approximately 1,100 attendees.

This positive dialogue and the potential for new air routes reflect a proactive approach to boosting tourism and economic activity in the Northern Mariana Islands, illustrating a hopeful outlook for increased connectivity in the region.

The engagement at Routes Asia 2025 resonates with broader trends in aviation, such as the development of new carriers like Micronesian Air Connection Services, which are focused on improving air connectivity. These steps taken collectively signify a strong commitment among Pacific nations to enhance transportation links, vital for economic growth and tourism.

As the region strives for increased air service and connectivity, it paints a promising picture for the future, fostering optimism about the potential for enhanced tourism and economic prosperity.
