The Divisional Commissioner North’s Office is taking important measures in anticipation of wet weather expected over the next 48 hours. Divisional Commissioner Uraia Rainima convened a meeting earlier today with leaders from various essential services, including the Fiji Roads Authority, Police, Fire Services, Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, Fiji Meteorological Services, and Land Transport Authority. The goal was to finalize operational plans and ensure that resources are available to support communities that may be impacted.

Despite heavy rainfall overnight, the Fiji Roads Authority has reported that connecting roads across the island remain clear and accessible. Updates from the Fiji Meteorological Service have provided critical forecasts, enabling agencies to enhance their preparedness efforts.

In a proactive approach, the Ministry of Education is preparing schools to serve as evacuation centers if necessary. Residents living in low-lying areas are advised to take precautionary measures by moving to higher ground during daylight hours to mitigate risks. It is also emphasized that unnecessary travel at night should be avoided to enhance safety for individuals and first responders. Those uncertain about evacuation centers or requiring assistance are urged to contact local authorities or the police.

In addition, Commissioner Rainima has called on farmers to relocate livestock to higher ground and secure their properties to protect their livelihoods. He stressed the importance of safety during this period, urging everyone to pay attention to weather advisories and take early action to prepare.

“Your safety is our top priority,” Rainima stated. “Stay calm, listen to updates, and do not hesitate to reach out for help if necessary.”

The Commissioner’s Office will be closely monitoring the situation and providing updates as needed, ensuring that the community is equipped to deal with the impending weather challenges.

In summary, authorities are actively working together to ensure community safety, and residents are encouraged to prepare and stay informed during this wet weather period. By taking a cooperative approach and heeding safety warnings, the community can navigate this weather event effectively.
