Doctor Marcus Brand has been appointed as the Chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). With over 25 years of international experience, Dr. Brand has an extensive background collaborating with organizations such as the United Nations, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and the European Union.
Originating from Austria, he brings a wealth of expertise in democratic governance, having worked across various regions including Europe, South and Southeast Asia, and the United States. Notably, from 2020 to 2024, he led the Myanmar Programme at the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance. Prior to that, he was instrumental in guiding the United Nations Development Programme’s efforts on democratic governance reform in Ukraine from 2015 to 2020.
In 2014, his role in a UNDP democratic governance assessment in Fiji focused on crucial areas such as social cohesion, development challenges, and historical legacies. The TRC highlights Dr. Brand’s work in transitional justice processes, accountability mechanisms, and dialogue support, further emphasizing his commitment to addressing historical injustices.
Currently, Dr. Brand also serves as a Global Goodwill Ambassador for the Korea Democracy Foundation. His academic credentials include a doctoral degree in international and constitutional law from the University of Vienna, a master’s in human rights law from the European University Institute, and a diploma in international relations from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies.
Dr. Brand’s contributions to literature are significant, as he has authored numerous articles and studies focusing on constitutional change, international conflict, and sustainable development, showcasing his dedication to advancing governance and human rights globally.
This appointment signals a positive step towards fostering dialogue and healing in communities impacted by conflict, paving the way for meaningful reconciliation efforts.
