Marnus Labuschagne’s impressive half-century and resilient lower-order batting pushed Australia to a substantial 333-run lead by the end of day four of the fourth Test in Melbourne. With India facing an uphill climb for an unprecedented chase, Australia ended the day at 228 for nine, thanks in part to a late unbeaten partnership of 55 runs between Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland.

Labuschagne contributed 70 runs, while Australian captain Pat Cummins added 41 runs, stabilizing the innings after Jasprit Bumrah’s stunning three-wicket haul threatened to swing the game in India’s favor. In front of a lively crowd of 43,867 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Bumrah’s efforts included dismissing key players to reduce the Australians from a comfortable 80 for two to a precarious 91 for six.

In a tense conclusion to the day, Bumrah caught Lyon at slips but was let down by a no-ball call, highlighting the disappointment for the touring team. Australia’s tailenders showcased grit in their stand, particularly as India’s fielding faltered with several missed opportunities, including drops that could have shifted momentum back in India’s favor.

Although India has struggled, they managed to remain in contention, an achievement owed to Nitish Kumar Reddy’s excellent century. His 114 runs offered hope for the visitors, while the match attendance reached a remarkable 299,329, setting a record for a Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.

As the series remains level at one game each, there is a palpable sense of excitement for the final match days, with fans eagerly anticipating how India will respond on this daunting chase.

This fourth Test has not only highlighted the resilience of both teams but also promises an action-packed finale, reminding everyone of the unpredictable nature of Test cricket.
