Workers participating in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) Scheme enjoy the same rights and protections as their Australian counterparts, according to Jan Hutton, First Assistant Secretary of Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Notably, workers under this scheme benefit from additional safeguards aimed at ensuring their welfare, particularly given their higher vulnerability in lower-skilled jobs.

Hutton emphasized that PALM workers are entitled to the same wages as Australians for the same work, and they must receive a minimum of 120 hours of paid work every four weeks, which promotes financial stability and assists in effective budgeting for remittances to their families back home. Furthermore, there is a requirement that every PALM worker takes home at least AUD 200, helping to alleviate financial pressure.

In acknowledgement of potential seasonal work shortfalls, if PALM workers log fewer than 20 hours in a week, employers are mandated to cover their accommodation and transport costs. The Australian Government is making significant investments to bolster the welfare of PALM workers, aiming to ensure a positive and secure employment experience.

This government’s commitment aligns with ongoing discussions about improving conditions for Pacific workers, reflecting a broader dedication to safeguarding their rights and well-being. Previous reports have highlighted the implementation of various welfare initiatives, including cultural competency training for employers and the appointment of worker welfare officers to provide support.

This positive trend indicates that Australia is not only providing opportunities for economic growth for these workers but is also making strides to create a more respectful and fair labor environment. As efforts continue to be directed towards enhancing protections and support systems, there is hope for a progressive future where all participants in the PALM program can thrive while feeling valued in their roles.
