Peter Roberts has been appointed as Australia’s new High Commissioner to Fiji, succeeding Ewen McDonald. Roberts, a seasoned diplomat with extensive experience, recently served as the Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy in Tokyo and has previously held positions including Australia’s Ambassador to Timor-Leste. His professional background also includes involvement in various diplomatic missions in Samoa and Japan, as well as significant work as a Senior Civilian Monitor in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea.
During their meeting, President Lalabalavu underscored the importance of Australia as Fiji’s largest development partner, particularly through the Fiji-Australia Vuvale Partnership Agreement which has facilitated initiatives across critical sectors including trade, investment, and health. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening this partnership as they face common challenges such as climate change, economic development, and regional stability.
Foreign Affairs Minister Senator Penny Wong commended Roberts on his appointment, highlighting the shared goals of both Australia and Fiji, which include addressing climate action and enhancing defense cooperation.
