Dr. Brett Robinson from Australia has been elected as the new chairman of World Rugby, following two rounds of voting held during the 2024 interim World Rugby Council meeting in Dublin, Ireland. At 54 years of age, Robinson makes history as the first president elected from the Southern Hemisphere. He was selected by the 52-member Council, triumphing over candidates Abdelatiff Benazzi from France and Italy’s Andrea Rinaldo.

The election was conducted through a secret ballot, which was conducted under the supervision of independent scrutineers and observers, ensuring adherence to World Rugby’s Constitution. Robinson’s term will span four years, during which he will have the option to seek re-election for an additional four-year period in 2028.

In his address to the Council, Robinson expressed his gratitude, stating that it is both a privilege and an honor to serve as the World Rugby chairman. He emphasized his genuine enthusiasm about collaborating with council members from various countries and the collective vision to enhance the sport.

Robinson outlined several key commitments for his tenure, including:

– Ensuring financial sustainability for all member unions in light of increasing costs and wage inflation.
– Thoughtful implementation of World Rugby’s global growth strategy.
– Fostering skills that enhance audience engagement and business outcomes.
– Expanding the fan and player communities by investing in player safety, legal reforms, and innovative practices.
– Maintaining a disciplined and effective governing body.

He reiterated his goal of channeling the passion for rugby to foster a culture that delivers commercial success while maintaining a commitment to the game’s growth.

Robinson takes over the role from Sir Bill Beaumont, whose eight-year tenure has officially concluded. Beaumont is remembered for his leadership in significant governance and international calendar reforms, as well as for promoting the growth of both men’s and women’s Rugby World Cups. His tenure was marked by navigating the challenges posed by the global pandemic and strengthening relationships with professional leagues and player associations.

The election of Robinson signifies a new chapter for World Rugby, with hopes for reform and growth in the sport moving forward.

Overall, Robinson’s election presents an exciting opportunity to expand the sport’s reach, deepen its roots globally, and prioritize player safety and engagement, promising a positive future for rugby enthusiasts worldwide.
