Dr. Brett Robinson has been appointed as the new chairman of World Rugby following an election that took place during the 2024 interim World Rugby Council meeting in Dublin, Ireland. At 54 years old, Robinson becomes the first chairman from the Southern Hemisphere, triumphing over candidates Abdelatiff Benazzi from France and Andrea Rinaldo from Italy.
The election was conducted through a secret ballot which adhered to World Rugby’s Constitution, with independent observers ensuring transparency during the process. Robinson’s term will last four years, with an option for re-election in 2028.
In his acceptance speech, Robinson expressed his gratitude, stating it is a “privilege and honor” to lead World Rugby. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with member unions and the World Rugby executive team to address key challenges, including financial sustainability amid rising costs, executing World Rugby’s global growth agenda, enhancing audience engagement, and focusing on player safety and innovation.
He further committed to fostering a disciplined governing body and creating a culture that delivers commercial success in the evolving sports landscape. Robinson also congratulated the other elected members and expressed eagerness to work with the new Executive Committee, highlighting his determination to build on the sport’s strengths.
Robinson takes over from Sir Bill Beaumont, whose tenure spanned eight years and was marked by significant reforms in governance, the expansion of Rugby World Cups, and a strong focus on the women’s game, while also steering the sport through the challenges posed by the global pandemic.
This new leadership represents a hopeful transition for World Rugby, with Robinson’s vision aligning closely with the evolving demands of the sport. His focus on sustainability, growth, and inclusivity could pave the way for a vibrant future in rugby, engaging fans and fostering talent at every level.
Overall, the appointment of Dr. Robinson is seen as a positive step toward enhancing Rugby’s global reach and ensuring its resilience in a rapidly changing sports environment.
