Two Australian women have been discharged from hospital after falling ill from cocktails consumed at a five-star hotel in Fiji. The women, aged 18 and 56, were part of a group of seven individuals hospitalized last weekend after drinking at the Warwick Fiji Resort, located along Coral Coast.

David Sandoe, who lives in Sydney, shared that his daughter Tanya and granddaughter Georgia were the ones affected. Georgia experienced a seizure, prompting their hospitalization for observation and treatment. Thankfully, both have now recovered and are on their way back to Sydney, accompanied by Australian consular staff.

Mr. Sandoe described the distressing moment of receiving news about their illness while they were abroad. “It’s very difficult to take a call at 11 o’clock at night and your daughter and granddaughter are away — and your daughter says that they have been poisoned and they’re in hospital,” he remarked.

The two women had intended to enjoy a relaxing holiday in Fiji, but instead faced a health scare. They were reportedly with another Australian mother-daughter duo who remain hospitalized due to similar symptoms, which included nausea, vomiting, and neurological effects.

Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister, Viliame Gavoka, has acknowledged the seriousness of the situation. While he cannot definitively confirm the cause of the illnesses pending toxicology results, he noted that methanol poisoning is a concern but one he believes is unlikely in Fiji.

In light of these events, it is reassuring to know that the two women are recovering and that authorities are taking the situation seriously. As health officials conduct thorough investigations, there is hope that such incidents can be prevented in the future, ensuring that tourists can continue to enjoy their vacations with peace of mind.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of monitoring food and beverage safety abroad, and it is encouraging to see responsible actions being taken by local authorities in response to these unforeseen challenges.
