Australian Government’s Absence at Key Forum Sparks Business Concerns

Allison Haworth West, president of the Australia-Fiji Business Council (AFBC), expressed her disappointment over the Australian Government’s lack of representation at this year’s Fiji-Australia and Australia-Fiji Business Councils Joint Forum, taking place at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.

She emphasized that businesses are essential for creating integrated links and relationships between the two countries, which can yield mutual benefits. West noted the importance of the week for the Pacific region, highlighting the ongoing Pacific Island Forum in Tonga that has drawn many Australian political leaders away. Despite efforts from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the High Commission to encourage political attendance, she acknowledged that timing issues affected the outcome.

West stated, “It is disappointing not to see the senior Australian political representation that should really be in the room.” She further elaborated on the significance of business opportunities in fostering lasting relationships and driving economic growth between Australia and Fiji.

While acknowledging Canberra’s strong commitment to Fiji and the Pacific through public policies, she stressed the importance of in-person interactions. “In the spirit of Vuvale, it is in-person contact that is most important,” she said.

West urged the Australian Government to recognize this importance, stating that while aid, grants, and other initiatives support Fiji, true engagement is vital. She concluded by noting that the connections and discussions at the Forum could create a strong foundation for advancing business opportunities and enhancing prosperity for both nations.
