Allison Haworth West, president of the Australia-Fiji Business Council, expressed her disappointment regarding the lack of representation from the Australian Government at this year’s Fiji-Australia and Australia-Fiji Business Councils Joint Forum, which is taking place at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva.
West emphasized the importance of businesses in creating integrated links and relationships between the two nations, which can lead to mutual benefits. She noted that the timing of the forum coincides with the Pacific Island Forum in Tonga, which has occupied many Australian political leaders. Despite efforts by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the High Commission to encourage their attendance, she acknowledged that the situation was not ideal.
She stated, “It is disappointing not to see the senior Australian political representation that should really be in the room.” West further articulated that facilitating business opportunities is essential for building sustainable and beneficial economic relationships between Fiji and Australia.
While recognizing Australia’s strong commitment to Fiji and the Pacific through robust public policies, West highlighted the importance of in-person engagement. She noted, “In the spirit of Vuvale, it is in-person contact that is most important.” She urged the Australian Government to prioritize this engagement, stating that while assistance through aid, grants, and loans is valuable, direct interaction is crucial.
The discussions held at the forum are expected to create a fertile environment for fostering new business opportunities, prosperity, and overall societal well-being, thereby supporting economic growth for both nations.
