Australian Doctor in Fiji Court Faces Trespass and Assault Charges

An Australian national, Dr. Andrew Robert Brewin, appeared before the Suva Magistrate’s Court recently, facing serious charges of criminal trespass and assault resulting in actual bodily harm. Dr. Brewin, who works as an obstetrician and gynaecologist at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, was represented by lawyer Abhishek Patel of Patel Skiba Lawyers, while the prosecution was conducted by Tomasi Senimoli from the Police Prosecutions Office.

The alleged victim in this case has been identified as Jeff Larson, the managing director of the Nanuku Resort located in Galoa. During proceedings, Dr. Brewin was granted bail under strict conditions, which included a $500 bail bond secured by sureties. Additionally, he was required to surrender his passport, and a stop departure order was issued to prevent him from leaving the country.

Mr. Patel requested a ban on media coverage of the case, citing possible adverse effects on Dr. Brewin’s professional reputation and patient relationships. However, Magistrate Sufia Hamza denied this request, allowing the media to report on the developments of the case.

The matter has been adjourned to November 25, with the next hearing set to take place at the Navua Magistrate’s Court. The case highlights the legal system’s approach to serious allegations, underscoring the importance of addressing such matters judiciously while ensuring that the rights of all parties are respected.

As the legal process unfolds, it is hopeful that it can lead to a resolution that fosters healing and accountability.
