Australian Cabin Crew Rape Case: Farmer Remanded in High Court

A man accused of the alleged rape of an Australian airline cabin crew member was further remanded by the Nadi Magistrate’s Court. Ilaisa Tanoa Degei, a 24-year-old farmer from Navosa, appeared in court charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of rape.

During the hearing, prosecutor Sergeant Siteri Naika represented the State, detailing that the alleged offenses took place on New Year’s Day in Nadi. The court heard that Degei is accused of sexually assaulting the airline employee by inappropriately touching her without her consent. He was informed of the charges and understood them fully.

Due to the nature of the case being of national interest, bail has been denied. Magistrate Mareta Tikoisuva has transferred the case to the High Court in Lautoka, where Degei will remain in custody. Magistrate Tikoisuva advised that his bail application could be made at the High Court. The case is scheduled for adjournment on January 20 at the Lautoka high court.
