Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles has called for increased military transparency from China, emphasizing the need for better communication as concerns rise over the nation’s growing military presence and activities in the Pacific. Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, Marles highlighted the importance of fostering a more “productive” relationship between Australia and China, especially amid anxieties surrounding China’s assertiveness in the region.
In recent months, both Australia and New Zealand have expressed alarm over Chinese military exercises, notably a series of live-fire drills conducted by Chinese warships in the Tasman Sea that disrupted air traffic. While these exercises were within legal bounds, Marles criticized China for failing to provide adequate prior notice, which led to unnecessary disruptions and heightened tensions.
Marles underscored that China’s military actions are closely monitored, asserting that transparency is vital for maintaining regional stability, especially as Chinese officials have indicated plans for further naval drills. In response to these developments, Australia has announced plans to boost its defense spending to 2.4% of GDP by the early 2030s. This commitment includes a significant investment of $2 billion to support U.S. submarine shipyards in anticipation of acquiring three nuclear-powered submarines scheduled for delivery starting in 2032, marking Australia’s most substantial defense acquisition to date.
