Fiji has officially welcomed its latest Guardian-class patrol boat, the RFNS Timo, a generous gift from Australia that enhances the long-standing relationship between the two nations. The ceremony took place in Perth, where Fiji’s Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, along with Permanent Secretary Mason Smith and Deputy RFMF Commander Humphrey Tawake, expressed their gratitude.

Minister Tikoduadua highlighted the importance of the new vessel, stating, “This remarkable addition to our maritime fleet strengthens our ability to safeguard Fiji’s waters, protect our natural resources, and uphold regional security.” He conveyed his appreciation to Australia for its vital support.

The RFNS Timo replaces the decommissioned RFNS Puamau, addressing an operational gap in Fiji’s maritime capabilities. The vessel, constructed by Austal, was initially intended for Timor-Leste but was renamed Timo in honor of Able Seaman Timo Puamau, a Fijian sailor who lost his life during World War II.

Alongside RFNS Timo, Fiji’s fleet also includes the RFNS Savenaca (401), another patrol boat named in memory of a Fijian sailor from World War II. Both vessels are integral to a program designed to enhance Fiji’s maritime security and border protection while safeguarding its natural resources.

The Guardian-class Patrol Boat Programme from Australia recently achieved a significant milestone with the transfer of its 21st vessel to Tuvalu, with a total of 24 vessels planned for the program. Minister Tikoduadua remarked, “This gift symbolizes the deep partnership and shared commitment between Fiji and Australia.”

This collaboration marks a significant step forward for Fiji in bolstering its maritime capabilities, ensuring enhanced security and resource protection in the years to come. The gesture also showcases the strength of international partnerships that prioritize regional stability and mutual respect.

Overall, as Fiji continues to strengthen its maritime defense, the future looks promising for improved security and resource management in the Pacific region.
