Australia Partners with Fiji for CWM Hospital Revamp: What’s Next?

The Australian Government has appointed Johnstaff International Development to develop the master plan for the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital, in collaboration with GHD, Silver Thomas Hanley, and International SOS Australia.

In the announcement, Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Penny Wong, acknowledged the dedication and skill of health professionals in Fiji, echoing similar sentiments in Australia regarding healthcare as a fundamental right for all citizens. She expressed gratitude for Fiji’s call for assistance and highlighted the collaborative efforts in responding to their healthcare needs.

Wong stated, “Today, we are delivering on what we have heard. We are in the original hospital built over 100 years ago, and I am pleased to announce that Johnstaff International Development has been selected to deliver the CWM Hospital master plan.” She emphasized the urgency of enhancing health services while also committing to a thorough engineering assessment of the current hospital facilities to ensure they remain operational during the master plan’s development.

Wong expressed Australia’s pride in supporting Fiji and reinforced the depth of the partnership aimed at enhancing services, creating inclusive opportunities, and fostering peace and prosperity in the region. She noted the Vuvale partnership is grounded in mutual trust and respect.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka reciprocated by expressing Fiji’s gratitude to the Australian Government for funding the redevelopment of the CWM Hospital. He highlighted the hospital’s name as a tribute to Fijian soldiers who served in global conflicts, with the names of those who sacrificed their lives prominently displayed at the entrance.

Rabuka stated, “This partnership highlights the significant progress we are making together and will be shared worldwide to illustrate the importance of our collaboration.”
