The Australian Defence Force (ADF) has successfully concluded its involvement in Operation Kuru Kuru, which aims to combat illegal, unregulated, and unreported fishing in the Pacific region, particularly collaborating with Fiji.
Operation Kuru Kuru is a vital coordinated maritime surveillance initiative where Pacific Island nations unite to monitor and safeguard their exclusive economic zones. As part of this effort, the ADF utilized a C-27J Spartan aircraft and a KA350 King Air, operating from various locations including Vanuatu, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, and Fiji.
Vice Admiral Justin Jones, the Commander of Joint Operations, highlighted that the ADF’s support extends from naval contributions aiding the Forum Fisheries Agency’s Operation 365, which involves frequent maritime patrols across the Southwest Pacific. He emphasized the importance of unity, stating, “We are at our best when we work together as a Pacific family, to face joint challenges together.”
The ADF’s participation in Operation Kuru Kuru falls under Operation Solania, signifying its ongoing commitment to enhancing maritime surveillance throughout the Pacific region.
This collaborative effort not only demonstrates Australia’s commitment to the Pacific community but also serves as a hopeful reminder that regional partnerships are essential to tackling common challenges and ensuring sustainable practices in ocean resource management.
