The Australian Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Fiji by pledging an additional $AU50 million (approximately $F72 million) in grant budget support for the financial year 2024-2025. This announcement was made during a signing ceremony attended by Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, who emphasized the importance of this funding in driving key reforms and promoting inclusive economic growth.

Over the past five to six years, Australia has provided over $580 million in development assistance to Fiji. This substantial support includes nearly $400 million in budget grants, funding for social welfare programs exceeding $40 million, almost $60 million for school and social infrastructure rebuilding, and around $15 million towards the CWM Hospital, among various other initiatives.

Australian High Commissioner Ewen McDonald also highlighted the impact of this funding, noting that it has helped Fiji navigate various economic challenges, including those posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The budget support is tied to Fiji achieving mutually agreed reform actions in public financial management, further enhancing the resilience and economic growth of the nation.

This additional grant is a part of Australia’s broader initiative to strengthen the Vuvale Partnership, which aims to deepen collaboration and support between the two countries. Since the renewal of this partnership in October 2023, Australia has committed over $F280 million to various projects, with a focus on vital sectors such as education, health, and renewable energy.

This ongoing commitment showcases a deepening relationship and opens pathways for a more prosperous and resilient future for Fiji, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing developmental challenges and enhancing the quality of life for Fijian citizens.
