Australia and Papua New Guinea (PNG) are taking significant strides in strengthening their security and defense relations through recent treaty discussions held in Brisbane. This initiative is particularly relevant amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific, especially in response to China’s expanding influence in the region.

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles and PNG Defence Minister Billy Joseph held talks focused on affirming Australia as PNG’s primary security partner. Marles emphasized the close ties between the two nations, likening their relationship to being “tied to the hips.” This partnership has been long-standing, dating back to PNG’s independence in 1975.

The discussions occur in the context of mounting security concerns about China’s engagements in the Pacific, including a controversial policing agreement with the Solomon Islands that has raised alarms in both Australia and the United States. In this light, PNG has consistently signaled its preference for Australia as its main security ally.

Marles asserted that the proposed defense treaty would strengthen operational cooperation between the respective militaries. This is especially significant as PNG approaches its 50th anniversary of independence in 2025. Joint training exercises, such as Talisman Sabre, have previously showcased the collaborative efforts of both nations’ defense forces.

Both countries are keen to accelerate the treaty negotiations to enhance their collective security strategies against emerging threats. Analysts view this initiative as a critical step in counterbalancing China’s increasing influence, providing a structured approach for mutual support on security matters.

In addition to bolstering security ties, Australia plans to ramp up military cooperation, which could lead to increased regional stability and collaboration among Pacific nations. This renewed partnership embodies a hopeful outlook for the Pacific, creating opportunities for enhanced collective security and promoting resilience against external pressures, ultimately contributing to a safer and more cooperative regional environment.
