The Australian Government has appointed Johnstaff International Development to implement the master plan for the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital, collaborating with GHD, Silver Thomas Hanley, and International SOS Australia.
During the announcement, Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Penny Wong, praised the dedication and skill of healthcare professionals in Fiji, recognizing their essential contributions to local communities. She emphasized the belief that healthcare is a birthright for all, a sentiment shared by both Australians and Fijians. Wong noted that when Fiji sought assistance to enhance its healthcare system through the hospital’s master plan, Australia responded proactively.
Wong revealed that after a competitive procurement process, Johnstaff International Development was chosen to lead the CWM Hospital project. She acknowledged the urgent need for improvements in health services as she toured the current facilities. To address immediate health service needs, the Australian Government has also committed to conducting a detailed engineering assessment of the existing hospital structures to ensure they continue to serve the community effectively while the master plan is developed.
Wong expressed Australia’s pride in supporting this initiative and fostering a strong partnership with Fiji, aiming to enhance services, create more inclusive opportunities, and promote peace and prosperity within the region. She highlighted the Vuvale partnership, built on mutual trust and respect.
In response, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka expressed Fiji’s deep gratitude to the Australian Government for its financial support for the CWM Hospital redevelopment. He noted that the hospital honors the bravery of Fijian men who served in global military efforts during wartime, with their names memorialized at the main entrance of the facility. Rabuka highlighted the significance of this partnership, underscoring the collective progress being made and the global importance of their collaboration.
