A 26-year-old waitress is facing legal action after allegedly providing alcohol to her 23-month-old nephew during a drinking party in Tailevu. Reports indicate the woman offered her nephew a glass of beer and shared a photo of the child holding the drink on a social media platform, which drew the attention of authorities.

The incident, which occurred on January 25, 2025, resulted in her arrest, followed by an interview with the police. She has since been charged with one count of Giving Intoxicating or Spirituous Liquor to Children, as per Section 59 of the Juveniles Act 1973. Currently, she remains in police custody and is set to appear before the Nausori Magistrates Court.

Community leaders and child protection advocates have voiced their concerns regarding this incident, emphasizing the vital role adults play in ensuring children’s safety. Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, has condemned this behavior as a violation of children’s rights, urging community members to report rather than share such harmful content online.

This case highlights the critical issues surrounding child welfare and the need for adults to act responsibly. It presents an opportunity for education on the dangers of exposing minors to alcohol and the importance of vigilant supervision. Kiran’s call for community involvement is a positive step towards fostering protective environments for children, ensuring they grow up in safe and nurturing settings. Through open dialogue, education, and advocacy, there is hope for safeguarding children’s well-being in Fiji.
