Aumua’s Rugby Journey: Will He Choose to Represent Fiji?

Levi Aumua, a center for the Crusaders, has expressed the potential to represent the Flying Fijians in the future. The talented 30-year-old is eligible to play for New Zealand, Samoa, and Fiji, the latter through his mother’s heritage from Tailevu. Despite his eligibility, Aumua has yet to make an appearance for any national team.

Previously selected for the All Blacks XV in 2022, this experience hasn’t impacted his national eligibility. Currently, Aumua is in his second season with the Crusaders after spending two years with Moana Pasifika, where he made a significant impact, appearing in 22 matches and scoring eight tries.

Reflecting on his recent performance, Aumua shared that playing in Fiji against the Fijian Drua with a home crowd was special, especially leading to a satisfying 31-14 win. “I’ve been waiting a long time to beat the Drua; I’m really happy with the crowd and seeing my family who are in the country,” he noted, highlighting the emotional connection of playing in his mother’s homeland.

Aumua is considering opportunities in New Zealand before potentially moving abroad. His journey showcases the growing trend of players with Fijian roots exploring international representation, similar to George Bower, who also expressed interest in joining the Flying Fijians.

These developments reflect a positive outlook for Fijian rugby, which stands to benefit from experienced players like Aumua who wish to contribute to their national team’s success. The interest in representing Fiji indicates a vibrant future for the sport and the potential for strong performances in upcoming international competitions.
