Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has emphasized that increasing the number of nuclear-powered submarines among Australia, Britain, and the United States will bolster security in the Indo-Pacific region. He made this assertion ahead of his first meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Calgary.

Albanese reiterated the strategic significance of the AUKUS defense pact, which focuses on the integration of nuclear-powered submarines, remarking, “Having Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States all having increased nuclear-powered submarines… is something that will make the Indo-Pacific area more secure.” He pointed out that this joint effort aligns with U.S. interests while highlighting Australia’s commitment, including financial support for the U.S. submarine construction.

In discussions with Trump, Albanese is set to address pressing issues such as U.S. tariffs that have affected Australian exports, some of which the Australian government has labeled “acts of economic self-harm.” He aims to advocate for removing these tariffs to restore a more equitable trade relationship.

The Prime Minister also signaled a potential expansion of defense cooperation with Canada, discussing their interest in participating in AUKUS’s technological advancements. This reflects a broader commitment to strengthening relationships with democratic allies amid a shifting global landscape.

Interestingly, a recent poll revealed a decline in public trust in the U.S., with only 36% of Australians believing it acts responsibly. Despite these concerns, two-thirds of respondents supported the AUKUS pact, indicating a complex yet hopeful perspective towards defense collaboration in the region.

Overall, Albanese’s engagements at the G7 summit reflect a proactive approach to enhancing global partnerships and security strategies, with the potential for collaborative progress amid international challenges.
