International School Suva (ISS) is currently engaged in its annual inter-house athletics event, an essential step in preparing students for the upcoming Suva Zones competition next week. This year, around 350 students from grades 6 to 12 are participating, along with school staff, demonstrating their athletic abilities.
Paul Brotherton, the Athletics Director at ISS, shared his excitement for the school’s future at the Suva Zones, stating the goal of fielding approximately 30 athletes in various track and field events. He proudly mentioned the school’s reigning Inter High Jump champion, who set a record last year, and noted the presence of strong competitors in the 100m, 200m, and 400m races this year.
The dedicated ISS athletics coaching staff is working tirelessly to prepare these athletes for competition against other leading schools. The event is an embodiment of determination and teamwork, highlighting the importance of cultivating young talent in sports.
In a broader context, other Fijian schools are also actively preparing for the Suva Zones. For instance, Marist Brothers Primary School recently hosted their own inter-house athletics event to prepare their athletes for both the Suva Zone and the Chow Games. This reflects a growing trend in Fiji where athletics are being emphasized, focusing on both individual development and building a robust sporting community.
As anticipation mounts for the Suva Zones beginning next Thursday, students and their supporters hold high hopes for outstanding performances and hopefully successful results in the competitions ahead. The emphasis on youth sports not only illustrates the potential for enhanced teamwork and personal growth but also promises to positively shape Fiji’s sporting future. With such dedication to nurturing young talent, the outlook for aspiring athletes is indeed promising.
