Astonishing Appointment Raises Questions About Integrity in Fijian Governance

Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has voiced his astonishment over the appointment of Barbara Malimali as the new chair of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). His reaction follows a statement from fellow Opposition member Premila Kumar, who labeled the appointment as astonishing and unethical, noting that Malimali is under investigation by the very organization she is set to lead.

Speaking to the media, Seruiratu expressed that the appointment casts a negative light on the Government. “I’m shocked, but not surprised,” he remarked, emphasizing that the concerns about good governance and institutional integrity have been raised repeatedly. He clarified that the issue lies not with Malimali herself, but with the Government, which he believes must be held accountable for the decision.

Kumar further insisted that the Government needs to clarify how Malimali was appointed as FICAC commissioner despite ongoing investigations against her. She posed critical questions regarding the Judicial Services Commission’s (JSC) awareness of these investigations and whether they were ignored during the appointment process. Kumar expressed concerns about the ability of FICAC to operate with credibility when its leadership faces serious allegations.

She has called for the chair of the JSC to provide a detailed explanation regarding the appointment, questioning the apparent lack of due diligence in this important selection. Inquiries have been directed to the JSC concerning the confirmation of Malimali’s appointment.
