The Nausori Magistrate’s Court has decided to transfer the assault case of a 21-year-old police officer, Constable Apimeleki Vakarusabola Colamoto, to the High Court in Suva. This decision follows an incident where Colamoto reportedly assaulted Vilikesa Bari on November 17 of this year.

During a recent court appearance, Prosecutor Shelveen Sharma requested that the case be escalated to the High Court, and the magistrate agreed to this transfer.

Colamoto has been granted bail with several stipulations: he must pay a cash bond of $100 and provide two sureties. Additionally, he is required to surrender all travel documents, adhere to a stop departure order, refrain from reoffending while on bail, and avoid any interference with State witnesses.

His next court appearance is scheduled for January 20, 2025, at the High Court in Suva, where he will receive disclosures and formally enter his plea. He has been allowed time to seek advice from a Legal Aid lawyer.

This case highlights the judicial system’s commitment to addressing allegations of police misconduct transparently and upholding the rule of law. The conditions set forth for bail also demonstrate a careful approach to ensuring public safety while allowing the accused to prepare for his upcoming court proceedings.

In summary, this case will continue to unfold in a higher court, serving as an important reminder of the accountability expected from law enforcement personnel.
