Union members at Ba and Lautoka hospitals, managed by Aspen Medical, have voted in a secret ballot to consider industrial action. According to John Paul, the national secretary of the Construction, Energy, Timber, Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF), the union represents approximately 200 members in these facilities, excluding nurses and doctors.
Earlier this year, the union submitted a log of claims to Aspen Medical, requesting improvements in terms and conditions of employment, along with an increase in wages and salaries. Mr. Paul highlighted ongoing concerns among workers regarding unpaid public holiday pay and delays in overtime wages.
This situation underscores the need for dialogue between labor unions and management to address workers’ grievances and improve working conditions. A successful resolution could lead to better job satisfaction and overall service quality at the hospitals, benefiting both employees and patients alike.
With ongoing discussions, there is hope that the issues can be resolved amicably, ensuring that both the rights of the workers and the smooth operation of healthcare services are prioritized.
