Parents, guardians, and childcare providers in Fiji are being called upon to vigilantly monitor the health of young children amid the ongoing extreme weather conditions the country is facing. Health authorities emphasize the importance of adhering to fundamental hygiene practices and illness prevention strategies to mitigate the spread of common childhood illnesses during this challenging time.

Families are advised to ensure that children engage in frequent handwashing with soap and water and adhere to proper etiquette when coughing and sneezing. The use of masks is also encouraged where appropriate. Children exhibiting symptoms like fever, cough, flu, cold, or diarrhea should remain at home from school, kindergarten, or daycare to help prevent the transmission of illnesses to others.

Moreover, parents are urged to keep their children’s vaccinations current as per the National Immunisation Schedule. Seeking medical attention at the first sign of illness, rather than opting for self-medication, is also strongly recommended.

The Ministry of Health is actively coordinating efforts with various healthcare divisions, including the Paediatric Unit at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, to closely monitor the health scenario and respond accordingly. Authorities stress that vigilance and prompt action are crucial in safeguarding children’s health during this period of increased risk.

In these trying times, a united community effort can significantly contribute to the well-being of children, ensuring they remain healthy and able to thrive despite the adverse weather conditions. By practicing preventive measures, families can help create a safer environment for the youngest members of their communities.
