Vera Sapozhnikova, a familiar face at Suva’s ROC Markets, showcased her vibrant products at the MSME Festive Market that concluded recently at the Civic Centre Car Park in Suva. Originally from Russia, Ms. Sapozhnikova has made Fiji her home since arriving in 2006 as a Christian missionary.

For many years, she served as a Bible teacher in local churches but has since retired. Five years ago, she transformed her hobby of creating artistic decorations from discarded materials into a small business. Her stand featured uniquely hand-painted bottles and plates, which she meticulously decorates through a process involving eight stages of acrylic painting.

Despite a common belief that her designs are influenced by her Russian heritage, Ms. Sapozhnikova insists that they reflect her personal style, stating, “The design is from my own heart.” Her pieces, typically priced between $25 and $75, highlight her passion and dedication as she learned the art independently.

Living a peaceful life in Nausori following the loss of her husband in Russia, Ms. Sapozhnikova remains close to her two sons, who are still in her home country. Her story illustrates the beauty of embracing creativity and building a life filled with purpose and passion in a new land.

This article encapsulates the journey of self-discovery and the power of art to connect cultures. By sharing her unique creations, Ms. Sapozhnikova not only enriches the local craft scene but also fosters understanding and appreciation for individuality through art.
